Papers of Walter George Woolnough [manuscript]. 1894-1958.

The collection contains correspondence, travel diaries, short stories, translations, newspaper articles by and about Dr. Woolnough, unpublished articles and notes, testimonials, obituaries, and photographs of the Australian outback. There are also diaries of Mrs M.J. Woolnough. Most of the letters were written by Dr. Woolnough to his family, while on his various inland and overseas trips, but there are also letters from Sir Edgeworth David, Charles Walcott and Frank Debenham.

Geologist. Educated University of Sydney. Lecturer, Universities of Sydney and Adelaide, 1898-1912, first Professor of Geology at University of Western Australia, 1912-1919. Member of expeditions to Funafut (1897), Fiji (1901, 1905), Northern Territory (1911). In 1930 he was appointed by the Commonwealth Government to tour the oilfields of the U.S.A. and Argentina and in 1932 he made the first aerial survey of oil possibilities in Australia.
